Anglo Arab Organization delegation visits Darfur refugee camp in Sudan

Auchi got Beshir’s assurances on Darfur crisis
 
Nadhmi Auchi, President of the Anglo Arab Organisation (AAO), expressed satisfaction with the outcome of an AAO-sponsored visit made by a delegation of British and European MPs to in a bid to help solve the crisis in Darfur .

“The parliamentary delegation was able to acquire a more comprehensive perspective of the crisis in
Darfur by visiting the region and conducting meetings with a number of Sudanese figures,” said Auchi.

“Our meeting with the Sudanese president Omer al-Beshir was very productive. The parliamentary delegation expressed Europe ’s concerns with the situation in Darfur . The Sudanese president gave his government’s position on the matter, asserting that Khartoum will remain committed to its regional and international obligations,” Auchi added.
The delegation included former leader of the British Liberal Democrats Party Lord Steel, former leader of the British Conservative Party Michael Howard, a number of British MPs, Irish Senator Donal Lydon, and members of the AAO.

Present at the meeting was the British Ambassador to
Khartoum , Dr Rosalind Mary Marsden, and representatives from the media.
“We visited refugee camps in Darfur and saw some of the areas of conflict. The situation there was indeed unfortunate. However, there are efforts by various sides, including the Sudanese government, to aid the victims of the conflict,” noted Auchi.

“The delegation met the head of the African peace keeping forces who explained the difficulties his troops face. The delegation also informed all the parties they met of their views,” added Auchi.


 

Lord Steel and Michael Howard meet Darfur Governor

Regarding the delegation’s meeting with the Mayor of Darfur Mohamed Youssef Kobr, Auchi said: “The Mayor has provided us with all the means possible to have access to more knowledge regarding the situation of the refugees as well as explain the difficulties which the local authorities in Darfur face.”
The delegation met members of Arab and international humanitarian aid agencies working in Darfur who said that the region requires more aid than political stances.
The delegation also met members of different Sudanese factions to try to reach a compromise that would lead to finding a resolution to the conflict.
Auchi concluded that the delegation will explain Khartoum ’s position to the British government and to the European Commission, while also hoping to highlight the urgent need of more aid for .
The AAO, a non-governmental organization that aims to build political and economic bridges between Britain and the Arab World, had previously embarked on humanitarian ventures in Lebanon (in the aftermath of the Israeli war on the country) and in Iraq (in helping the country’s displaced and in attempting to secure the release of western journalists held hostage there).
