His Excellency Mr Adnan Omran


Mr Adnan Omran was appointed to the Committee of Patrons of the Anglo-Arab Organisation in January 2003.

Mr Omran was born in 1934 in Syria. He graduated from the Syrian University, Damascus in 1956 with a Bachelor Degree in Public Law, followed by a Diploma in Syrian Private Law. In 1964 he obtained a Diploma in Diplomatic Studies and International Law from Columbia University in New York.

In 1964 Mr Omran became a member of the Permanent Mission of Syria to the United Nations, and in 1970 was as Director of the International Organisations Department and Special Offices at the Syrian Foreign Ministry. Mr Omran is actively involved in many domestic and international issues. In 1966 he was appointed as First Secretary of the Syrian Embassy in Moscow, and between 1968 and 1970 as Counsel – General of the Syrian Arab Republic in Berlin. From 1974 until 1980 Mr Omran was appointed as Ambassador of Syria to the United Kingdom and Sweden.

Mr Adnan Omran is an active member on the political arena. Between 1980 and 1996 he was Assistant Secretary–General for Political Affairs, representing Syria and the League of Arab States in many International Conferences and UN Committees. These included Euro-Arab Dialogue, Afro-Arab cooperation, Political dialogue with different regional organisation and the United Nations. Mr Omran was also Deputy Foreign Minister from 1996-1998 and Minister of Information from 2000-2003.
